Auto Insurance Arkansas Requirements

Act 991 of 1997 created the requirement for the Insurance Verification and Notification Network Program. The Act requires the Department of Finance and Administration and the Office of Driver Services, to create and implement a system capturing proof of insurance and coverage information for owner(s) of registered motor vehicles. The system was implemented January 1, 1998.

Minimum Requirements

Upon vehicle registration or title transfer in the state of Arkansas, proof of auto liability insurance must be submitted on your vehicle.

By law, the following minimum liability insurance is required:

  • $25,000 per person for bodily injury
  • $50,000 per accident
  • $25,000 to cover property damage

Keep proof of this coverage in your vehicle at all times.

Enforcement

The Arkansas Office of Motor Vehicles keeps a database of all registered vehicles and is notified after 30 days from the time of insurance lapse. Without proper insurance, vehicle registration will be suspended.

If you don't want or need to maintain a valid registration on a vehicle you don't drive, you can cancel the insurance on it. Mail a letter with your VIN and insurance information to:
